Our stores turned red, white and blue last week to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day with union jack bunting, vintage dress and even sing-a-longs helping to mark the special occasion.
Central England Co-op teams brought a sense of patriotic pride to our community stores to help customers and Members get in to the spirit.
There were some fantastic displays created by our stores – for example Marsh Lane Food Store in Erdington was draped with union jack bunting, flags and other touches such as old Co-operative promotional window adverts to give shoppers visiting for their food and essentials the feeling of going back in time.
Meanwhile, our Main Street store in Stretton worked with local schools to display specially made bunting created by the talented schoolchildren.
There were also some great examples of community co-operation on show, for example at Ripley where the team provided the supplies for afternoon teas to be made and delivered to vulnerable residents.
Colleagues across our trading area dressed up in vintage attire to really invoke the spirit of VE Day, with the team at our Terrington St Clement store not only dressing the part but also holding a special sing-a-long of the Vera Lynn wartime classic ‘We’ll Meet Again’ for shoppers and locals to enjoy.
Led by talented local singer Courtney Remmig, the true display of national pride and community spirit was organised by Store Manager Pauline Drewery.
She said: “It was a really nice moment and it was lovely that Courtney agreed to come down and sing and even got dressed up with us.
“We wanted to do something special to lift the spirits. We are a real community store and had planned to raise money for our charity partner Dementia UK and bake cakes and do a bit of a street party but with the situation we’ve not been able to do that, so we still wanted to commemorate the day.
“We are proud to be part of a great community in Terrington and it was lovely to see some of the villagers join with us in the sing song. It was very poignant and moving and there were a few tears as well as smiles.”
