Member classes are just one of the exclusive benefits available to out Members and during lockdown many of these vital social outlets have had to be postponed in our communities.
However, all those involved recognise the value of such activities and some of our classes have continued to be provided online, including calligraphy, flower arranging and painting.
Many of our groups have long-established members and Su Goodman, Calligraphy tutor is setting challenges for her students to try at home and offering advice and support to keep them motivated while they continue to practice their skills. Classes would normally take place at the Salvation Army Centre in Leicester during term time on Monday mornings, Tuesday afternoons and Tuesday evenings.
Floristry tutor, Sharon McKinder, is also continuing to inspire her students with ideas on how to make beautiful arrangements with seasonal flowers from the garden, including Peonies, shown here. Step-by-step guides help budding florists through their weekly challenges. Floristry courses would normally meet on Thursdays at St. Nicholas Church, Main Street, Fleckney, Leicestershire 9.30am-11.30am, 12.45pm-245.pm and 7pm-9pm.
Students clearly miss the regular social contact and inspiration provided by their particular group, with one member saying, "I’m so missing flower classes and the chat, companionship and laughs we have as a group." While students are busy honing their skills at home for now, optimism for the future was expressed by another who said, "It will be great to get together, hopefully in the autumn and catch up with everyone and develop our flower arranging skills further".
Local groups are valuable in our communities as an aid to wellbeing and Lutterworth Watercolour Artists’ Co-operative show their skills with a themed approach to painting. You can see some of their work on the theme of 'gates' here, which demonstrate both humour and skill.
Karen Bevan, Membership and Community Relations Officer, said “The students are really grateful to our tutors for continuing to help them learn new skills and providing support and encouragement during lockdown. While some groups can’t meet right now, we hope that members of our groups can start to get together in person for valuable community support, learning and wellbeing in the near future.”
