Central England Co-op opens new store to support the community in Eastwood

Central England Co-op has officially opened its new store in Eastwood after investing over £300,000 in the local community.

The Society today cut the ribbon at its new store in Nottingham Road, powered by 100% renewable energy, offering the local community food and essentials right on their doorstep. The store is the result of a deal to take over a former Sainsburys Local store.

The store offers self-scan till points, a customer car park, a full range of products, a free hot and cold water refill station and a phone charging area.

The store also includes a food bank collection point supporting the great work of charity Salcare as it continues to manage the increased demand caused by the Coronavirus outbreak.

To mark the launch Store Manager Rachael Payne made a donation of a trolley full of food and essentials to the food bank to kick off the link-up and our Christmas Foodbank Appeal which begins on November 30 and runs right through until December 31.

David Howe, from Salcare, was on hand to accept the donation and Manager of Salcare Lizzie Nugent thanked Rachael for the donation and for Central England Co-op’s ongoing support.

She said: “The donations we get from Central England Co-op each week is, and has been, a godsend to our foodbank and has enabled Salcare to help vulnerable people in Amber Valley who would have gone hungry without support.

“We look forward to working with Rachael and the Nottingham Road store. We are grateful for all donations, but we think that children often get forgotten with food donations, so we would really benefit with donations of children’s treats such as sweets, colouring books, pens, as well as nappies and wipes.”

Rachael said her and the team were proud to launch the new store and to support the Eastwood community during these uncertain times.

He said: “It is great to finally open our doors to the local community as the team have been desperate to support our neighbours and ensure they can access food and essentials during the pandemic.

“All of us here at the new store are proud to be part of such a great community in Eastwood so we are delighted to be able to support Salcare’s Food Bank which is offering a lifeline to vulnerable residents and people struggling in these testing times.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank local residents for their patience while the work to transform the store into a Central England Co-op has been taking place. Hopefully everyone will enjoy the store as much as we do.”

In line with the latest Government guidance, the store has a range of social distancing measures in place which customers will be asked to adhere to, as well as other measures designed to keep everyone safe such as checkout screens and a hand sanitiser station at the entrance to the store.

The Nottingham Road Co-operative food store is open from 7am to 10pm, Monday to Sunday.

The store offers a wide range of products from everyday necessities to something a little more special.

This includes fresh fruit and vegetables, an in-store bakery offering breads and pastries, chilled beers and wines, fresh and frozen product, Irresistible product ranges, as well as a great selection of food to go.

It will also offer Lottery, Paypoint, Collect Plus and foreign currency, a Costa Coffee machine, customer seating inside, a free cash machine and a lifesaving defibrillator has also been installed.
